John has more than 30 years experience as a business and communications consultant to more than 80 regional, national, and international businesses and organizations, including hospitals, manufacturers, banks, associations, universities media outlets, retail companies and others.  He served as the Director of Public Relations for Indiana Farm Bureau, one of the largest state associations in America, and as the Director of Marketing and Communications for St. Joseph Hospital in Maine.  Much of his work has been in healthcare communications, having consulted for three hospitals as well as the Maine Healthcare Association.  He has won more than 85 regional and national awards for excellence in communications, including awards for print, television, radio and other forms of advertising and communications.


John was initially hired in 2005 as a communications consultant to the Department of
Environment, Health and Safety at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and then was asked to assist with the university’s pandemic planning effort.  For nearly three years, he focused on pandemic planning and communications, working with critical departments in developing their plans, reviewing and analyzing more than 215 plans for departments, schools, centers and institutes, and writing or co-writing all of the university’s policy and planning documents.

He served as an advisor to the UNC System and reviewed and consulted on all 16 of the UNC campus pandemic plans.  He has also served as a pandemic planning and communications consultant to Vanderbilt University, SUNY of Oneonta, SUNY of Geneseo, SUNY of Purchase, Buffalo State College, and the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association.

 

He has written and facilitated numerous tabletops including pandemic influenza, select agent and campus disturbances and his pandemic influenza tabletop has been used by the University of California, Penn State, the University of North Carolina System, and many other universities.

 

He has presented pandemic planning programs at FEMA’s 2008 Higher Education Conference, the annual conference of the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association and was a frequent panelist on the PaperClip Pandemic Planning Audio Conferences and NueSoft Technologies Webinars, and has made numerous presentations about pandemic influenza planning and communications to a number of other businesses and associations.


John is now responsible for communications for the department of Environment, Health and Safety at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and continues to consult for other universities and associations.
